The Steering Committee will be led by Minister of Construction Trinh Dinh Dung while Ms. Phan Thi My Linh, Deputy Minister of Construction was appointed the Permanent Deputy Head of the Steering Committee.

Members of the body include Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Van Trung, Deputy Minister of Transport Nguyen Hong Truong, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Tran Van Tung, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Tran Anh Tuan, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha, and Deputy Minister of Finance Tran Van Hieu.

The Steering Committee is responsible for designing annual and five-year plans on national urban development, providing guidelines for localities to build and implement local-level urban development plans, and coordinating ministries and localities in the implementation of the Prime Minister’s Decision 1659/QD-TTg, dated November 7, 2012 and the Decision 2623/QD-TTg, dated December 30, 2013.

It is also in charge of proposing solutions to arising issues and obstacles during the implementation process of the two decisions.

Earlier on November 7, 2012, PM Nguyen Tan Dung approved the 2012-2020 national urban development program.

The program sets the target to increase the national urbanization rate to 45% by 2020, including the establishment of two more special-grade cities. Urban infrastructure quality will be improved with the average floor area per person rising from 26m2 by 2015 to 29 m2 by 2020./.
